Who deserves the credit?

On a night that carried a rare family signature, Ruben van Bommel stole the spotlight on his Netherlands debut, teeing up a last-gasp equaliser against Germany and extending a legacy long tied to the Dutch shirt.

New Netherlands boss Xavi Hernández threw the 22-year-old PSV Eindhoven forward on in the 83rd minute. He needed only a few minutes to leave his mark.

Van Bommel cleverly won the ball on the left flank and surged forward, then whipped a superb pass with the outside of his boot into the penalty area. Cody Gakpo turned it straight into the net to snatch a 1-1 draw in the closing moments.

That touch did not go unnoticed. Germany coach Jürgen Klopp joked about the pass: "I have to say it was a wonderful pass from Van Bommel. He didn't get that skill from his father Mark van Bommel, he must have got the way of using the outside of the foot from his mother."

By facing Germany, Ruben van Bommel became the third generation of his family to pull on the Dutch shirt. It's an unprecedented feat in the history of Dutch football.

The bloodline runs deep. His maternal grandfather Bert van Marwijk played one international for the Netherlands, against Yugoslavia in 1975, before leading the side to the 2010 World Cup final.

Father Mark van Bommel, meanwhile, won 79 caps for the Netherlands between 2000 and 2012 and took charge of his first match as Belgium coach against Italy in the UEFA Nations League.
