Hellberg provides latest fitness update on several Middlesbrough players with forward close to return
Tommy Conway is set to return to training with Middlesbrough imminently as he nears a return to action.
The forward underwent surgery on the ankle injury that ruled him out of the World Cup before requiring a second operation last month to address a hernia problem.
The 23-year-old will not be available for Saturday’s home clash with West Brom but is close to a return.
“Tommy will hopefully train this week, which will be good,” boss Kim Hellberg said.
Elsewhere, Adilson Malanda is set to return to the side against West Brom after being rested for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Doncaster Rovers.
“Malanda is training fully today, so there is absolutely no problem with him,” he said.
Sam Byram, who joined Boro as a free agent earlier this week following his release by Leeds United, is building up his fitness.
“Sam Byram will also train today,” Hellberg added.
Ashley Phillips, meanwhile, is not expected to make his first Championship start for the club this weekend.
The 21-year-old made his Boro debut as a second-half substitute against Doncaster and impressed.
However, Hellberg believes Phillips needs more time before he is ready to start.
“I don’t think he [Phillips] is ready to start this weekend,” said Hellberg.
“I think it will take a little bit more time for him, but we are getting there. That’s the challenge for a coach, protecting the players so that they are fit enough to play when they do play.”
Alfie Jones is also continuing to build up his fitness too after also featuring against Doncaster.
“I think it’s the same with him [Jones],” said Hellberg.
“That was his first game since the Blackburn game in December and he did very well. He’s an unbelievable centre-back, and through my first five games, I think maybe he was my best player.
“But then that injury was very tough. Now, he’s getting there, but it’s the same thing, I just need to help him get back to the quality he has.”
