Graham Spiers calls out Ibrox sectarian abuse during Glasgow Derby

Journalist Graham Spiers has called out sectarian abuse during Sunday’s Glasgow Derby. Rangers won 3-0 as a floundering Celtic exited the Premier Sports Cup at Ibrox.

Posting on Twitter, Spiers remarked upon the songs directed at Martin O’Neill during the final stages of the game. In fairness, there were a number that he could’ve commented upon as well.

Celtic were second best throughout the afternoon and Spiers is correct that Rangers deserved their victory. The seasoned broadcaster is also correct that even in their celebrations that the songbook was wheeled out by the usual suspects.

There were no away supporters in attendance after the latest ticketing disagreement between clubs. Allocation spats have become commonplace in this fixture since 2018 and it has devalued one of the great derby spectacles. Next week, Celtic Park will be full and the Hoops will have a quick fire change to ensure some revenge on McInnes’ side.

Celtic have to regroup and focus on their next game – the UEFA Europa League opener against Ferencvaros – before the first league derby of the season. Rangers will be quietly confident about coming to Celtic Park next weekend, especially after McInnes’ tactical change enjoyed success over Celtic.
