GdS: Tactics and age – How Amorim will decide when and where to use Modric

Luka Modric’s usage at AC Milan is a key topic currently and the Croatian will not be a constant starter, it seems.

Although Modric doesn’t play like your stereotypical 41-year-old, he still is 41. It means he cannot be expected to play every minute again this season and the reliance on him cannot be so high. So, Ruben Amorim will use the international break to revise his plan for the midfielder.

Modric’s usage

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport looked at the parameters that Amorim will use to make decisions regarding Modric’s use. A part-time role was suggested in the summer, then it seemed that he would be vital again.

Now, after a touch-and-go opening, he looks likely to be used in the right moments, rather than every moment.

He won’t be seeing 3,000 minutes this season, or at least it’s unlikely that he will. After all, Amorim’s system will demand a healthy amount of rotation for everyone, let alone someone in the final months of their career.

Modric understands this, too. In games where transitions will be constant, others will be given chances to shine rather than dimming the Croatian. In games where he can shine, he’ll bring light to the team.

The aim is to keep him ready for ‘every game that we need him’ as Amorim put it. It’ll be a case of tactically assessing his team and the midfielder’s fitness; then decisions will be made.
