GdS: ‘Ramos recharged’ – how Amorim plans to unlock his goal scoring potential

Goncalo Ramos is one of the biggest additions in Serie A history and so far, AC Milan aren’t getting the most out of him.

It’s great to have a big-money striker who helps the system, but if that striker isn’t scoring goals, something needs to change. Ramos epitomises that quite well. Ruben Amorim’s system benefits from his willingness to run, but it doesn’t look as convincing because the team isn’t scoring tonnes of goals.

Now, some suggestions have been made to fix that.

Crosses

In this morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, the paper (seen below) looked at how Amorim can get more from Ramos and it starts out wide.

One of the striker’s biggest strengths is his ability in the air, as seen with his first goal officially as a Rossonero – after a cross from Rafael Leao during the World Cup. Even in pre-season, his aerial ability was seen.

Yet, it’s been shelved since. In Serie A, the Diavolo are 10th for crosses into the box and because of this, he isn’t really given a chance to shine.

Attacking with speed

He presses heavily and this would probably be considered his biggest strength right now, but he also needs everyone else to keep up. Under Amorim, Milan are expected to win the ball quickly and attack with the same speed.

Against Venezia, he had a chance like this – his only one of the season so far – and yet it wasn’t a success. It wasn’t unpredictable, though. With Ramos’ desire to help the team, he can be dragged away from the striker position and look like a midfielder. Whilst the sacrifice is appreciated, he must be the penalty box striker, too.

9% of his touches have come in the box and whilst he’s run the most of anyone, he’s not putting up striker numbers. Instead, it’s been those expected of a midfielder.

Extra help

Finally, he could be helped by a change in formation. The Portuguese has operated in a somewhat isolated manner so far, despite being the tip of a trident. Switching to a 4-2-3-1, though, could give some more aid with ‘proper’ wingers, rather than defensive wide players.

Perhaps this change could also bring a few penalties and with him the club’s new taker, this will add goals. In other words, he needs help and whilst he’s giving it to the rest of the team, he’s receiving little of it himself.
