GdS: 10 to 6 – Amorim re-assessing Rabiot’s role after early mixed signals

Adrien Rabiot’s position this season has been interesting. In pre-season, it was suggested that he could be an attacking midfielder for AC Milan, but this may not be the way forward.

It is clear that Rabiot possesses an immense amount of quality in a multitude of areas. After all, he can defend strongly and his goals and assists speak for themselves. In his past two seasons, he’s got 25 goals and assists, numbers of a forward.

So, it’s understandable why Ruben Amorim was tempted to deploy him in a different role. But this is now being revised.

Amorim’s reassessment

Gazzetta dello Sport, this morning, wrote that Amorim will not tie Rabiot down to one role from this moment. Of course, he’s been deployed in a more advanced role until now, but that was something of a necessity. It’s also impossible to rule out that he will be needed there in the future.

So, while the Portuguese understands the need for safety – playing him in a more defensive role – he needs to adapt his system to his players and vice versa.

After all, the Frenchman has maybe looked a little less effective in an advanced role, compared to what he can offer in midfield. He gives the contributions, but the rest of his play is not that of a natural No.10.

Roaming in midfield makes him comfortable and he knows how to play with Modric, which will be key. Wherever he plays, he brings quality. It’s no surprise that the renewal talks are heating up, with Amorim already appreciating him heavily.
