Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho said he is absolutely fine with the midfield he has, when asked about it in a recent press conference.

Real Madrid's midfield has been a huge topic of discussion in the last couple of seasons, where they have clearly struggled to be good consistently.

There has always been a profile or two that has been missing from the team, and even though they have brought in Bernardo Silva - who not only looks good but seems capable of solving some of the problems left behind by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, the idea among the fans and the media was that there is a need for another one.

Mourinho was asked about just that, and how the team's midfield is good, and that signing Rodri would have been a nice icing on the cake. He clearly stated, "We don't have a problem."

He said: “I don’t think we have a shortage. A midfielder would be the icing on the cake. When you have Tchouameni, Bernardo, Arda… In time, he’ll be able to play in those positions. We don’t have a problem.”

Real Madrid definitely needed a midfielder like Rod

There is only one way to find out, really. This has been said by Real Madrid managers or higher-ups since Kroos retired. They always say that there is no need to sign a midfielder, because the current crop is more than good enough.

However, by the end of the campaign, it becomes abundantly clear that another midfielder was needed, but the club did not act quickly enough.

This situation is slightly different; Real Madrid have signed Bernardo Silva this summer, whose ability on the ball and how he loves keeping it for long stretches would be amazing to have for the team's midfield.

It will definitely take away some of the problems that Real Madrid have had in the last couple years.

However, Silva isn't really a proper controller like Rodri, and he definitely isn't a youngster, like Martin Zubimendi - someone Real Madrid were linked with over the last couple of weeks.

Mourinho would obviously say that in the first press conference, either way, even if he wanted Real Madrid to sign a midfielder. He would not want to affect his relationship with the club just a few weeks into his new job, especially after the club has given him six brilliant signings.

It will be interesting to see how Mourinho manages this problem, though, and which kind of solutions come in place for the player.
