Former Rangers defender questions VAR accuracy after controversial Celtic double call

The Hoops were on the wrong end of two extremely tight decisions in Paisley, with Camilo Duran denied an equaliser during the first half after VAR Don Robertson judged him to be offside by the narrowest of margins.

It was part of an eventful night for referee Ryan Lee, who suffered a technical malfunction which temporarily cut his connection with the VAR team at Clydesdale House.

Celtic were left frustrated by VAR again late on when Shim Mheuka thought he had scored his first goal for the club. Robertson was unable to accurately draw the offside lines and called Lee to the monitor, where the referee eventually ruled the goal out.

Former Rangers defender Foster has now expressed his concern over just how reliable the technology can be when decisions come down to such fine margins.

Foster, speaking to Sportsound, said: “It’s a tight one (Duran), you’ll see the other one (Mheuka).

“I’m still not sure, I’m not sure those lines, cameras, are that accurate, because it is so tight, you are talking a couple of inches there, milliseconds.”

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill was equally unimpressed post-match, despite Liam Scales and Hyun-jun Yang completing the second-half turnaround to secure all three points.

The 74-year-old said: “I would probably be more unhappy about it if we had not won the game. Is that right? It wasn’t working properly? It was the same last season as well, I’ve never seen so many crooked lines in my life.

“You just cannot celebrate. It’s the first thing you think. I thought that when we scored, or thought we’d scored the goal in the first half, I thought well, it felt as if Yang, when he’s had the shot, that if it’s coming off it must be somebody rushing in to put the ball in the net.

“And even I thought that must be a goal. And then for it to be ruled offside. So you cannot celebrate. That goes for every manager, every coaching staff. You just can’t do it until it’s finally decided.”
