The Danish midfielder was pursued by Celtic across three consecutive transfer windows before eventually leaving Go Ahead Eagles for the Ligue 2 side earlier this summer.

Celtic’s attempts to land Breum became particularly notable last summer when Go Ahead Eagles’ sporting director publicly mocked the Hoops’ approach, comparing their negotiations unfavourably with Rangers’ move for Oliver Antman.

Breum has wasted little time making an impression at his new club.

The 22-year-old scored against Rangers at Ibrox during pre-season, before also finding the net in friendlies against Lausanne and Venezia.

He carried that form into the competitive campaign.

Breum registered a goal, an assist and a pre-assist inside the opening 30 minutes of Saint-Etienne’s Ligue 2 opener against Sochaux and was subsequently named man of the match.

His impressive run continued this weekend as he grabbed Saint-Etienne’s final goal in a 3-1 victory over Clermont, helping Ian Cathro’s side move to the top of the table.

Including pre-season, Breum has now scored in five consecutive matches.

It is still early days, but his immediate impact in France will inevitably leave Celtic supporters wondering what might have been after the club spent so long tracking the Dane.
