Maradona used the historic piece of football memorabilia to score his infamous handball opener before adding a dazzling solo effort four minutes later.

Shirt benchmark remains unbroken

According to a report from The Athletic, auctioneers had originally hoped the ball would challenge the benchmark set by Maradona's shirt from the same game, which fetched nearly $9.3 million at Sotheby's in 2022. The publication also noted that the final sum fell short of the all-time record for a sports ball, which remains held by baseball star Shohei Ohtani's 50th home run ball after it commanded $4.392 million in 2024.

Timing dampens bidding interest

The artefact previously changed hands for $2.37 million at Graham Budd Auctions in 2022 before failing to sell the following year when a top bid of $2.04 million did not meet the reserve price. Its relisting this summer sought to capitalise on the excitement surrounding the 2026 World Cup. However, the timing of the sale weeks after the final whistle, coupled with Argentina falling short in the tournament, likely cooled bidder demand.

Memorabilia market recalibrates values

The sale sets a realistic benchmark for vintage football collectibles after missing its ambitious $10 million estimate. Global collectors will watch closely to see if other rare 20th-century artefacts come to market in the coming months.
