CorSport: Cardinale wants to give Amorim a defender – why Gabriel is still a possibility

AC Milan are looking to strengthen their defence in the winter window, and Goncalo Inacio isn’t the only option.

Milan tried but were unable to secure the arrival of another central defender after Mario Gila, with a late €40m bid to try get Goncalo Inacio ultimately proving unsuccessful as Sporting CP failed to get a replacement in time.

This led to the reinstatement of Fikayo Tomori but he is yet to play, which seems to suggest that there is still a plan to add another option, especially given Filippo Terracciano starting against Benfica.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) has the headline: ‘Tiago Gabriel a target for early 2027’. During the winter transfer window, Gerry Cardinale would like to give Ruben Amorim a new defensive reinforcement, they confirm.

Among the names that are always being followed with great interest by the Rossoneri is also that of Gabriel in addition to his compatriot Inacio. The Portuguese – assisted by Jorge Mendes – renewed his contract with the Salento club until 2030 last week, but his ambition to take a next step is clear.

Either in January or next summer, Gabriel should move on. Milan remain on the prowl after the summer links, aware of the player’s qualities and ready to spend €25m or more for him. Much will clearly depend on Lecce and Milan’s league positions, and what they are fighting for.
