‘Continuously in the game’ – Goncalo Ramos draws praise after 1G+1A night for Portugal
The feeling is that when the international break comes to an end, Ruben Amorim will welcome back a more confident Goncalo Ramos.
Last night, Ramos led a national team still reeling from the Cristiano Ronaldo crisis, providing an assist and scoring a lovely goal in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, en-route to an eventual 4-2 win.
Following victories against Wales and Norway – a match in which the Milan striker also got a goal – the win in Copenhagen consolidates the Portuguese national team’s lead in Nations League Group D.
Furthermore, Ramos has reached 100 professional goals, most of which were scored between Paris and Lisbon. He has 45 with PSG , 41 with Benfica, one with Milan and 13 with Portugal. It was a gorgeous goal too: a lovely give-and-go with Bruno Fernandes, then a run in behind and finish.
His numbers last night read as follows: 1 goal, 1 assist, 6 shots (2 on target), 3 key passes, 1 hit woodwork, 30 touches, 95% passes completed, 1 clearance and 1 ground duel won.
High praise
MilanNews gave him a 7.5 out of 10 rating: “A post, an assist, a goal, a couple of wasted chances and the usual great work serving the team: Gonçalo Ramos continues to doVery wellagainst Portugal. Jorge Jesus’s team didn’t let the CR7 situation distract them and beat Denmark 2-4, playing an attacking match of character and substance.
“The Rossoneri striker was among the stars of the show: a sudden deflection in the box hit the post, a first-time assist from close range for Cancelo’s opener, and then the second goal: a backheel to free himself in the attacking midfield, then an immediate attack from the back, well-placed by Bruno Fernandes.
“One-on-one with the goalkeeper, he displayed great composure: a left-footed strike to the near post, anticipating any intervention from the goalkeeper. At the end of the first half, a beautiful cutback from a Leao cross was miraculously blocked by Hermansen, who used his body to block.
“In the second half, he came close again with a volley following a beautiful pass from Bruno Fernandes. A few minutes earlier, Ramos had made a remarkable comeback in the penalty area with a flying interception that looked almost like a midfielder.
Great performance, effective and continuously in the game: for MilanNews it is a 7.5-worthy performance.”
