Connor Goldson highlights Rangers ‘six months’ problem amid Derek McInnes rebuild

Connor Goldson has offered his assessment of Rangers' difficult start to the season, pointing to the scale of the squad turnover as a major challenge for Derek McInnes.

The former Rangers defender, who made more than 300 appearances for the club across six seasons, remains a regular viewer of his former side despite now playing his football in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol, following a switch from city rivals Aris.

Speaking during an interview with talkSPORT with Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist, Goldson admitted it has been a difficult start for Rangers but argued that the club's regular overhaul of the squad can make it difficult for new players to immediately settle.

“It has, I still keep an eye on it, I still watch some of the games, I've watched a few at the start of the season, it’s been tough,” he said.

“The turnaround is just so big every year, they have a new team every single year.

“I think at the start of every season it takes the team time to settle, time to gel, new players have to get used to what it's like to play for Rangers.”

Goldson believes that pattern has hurt Rangers in recent seasons, with performances improving later in the campaign only for the team to have left themselves with too much ground to make up.

Goldson's comments came during an emotional interview in which he also provided an update on his recovery from his second heart operation.

The former Rangers centre-back revealed that the 13-hour procedure had gone well and that he is already back running and working with a ball.

He remains unable to take part in contact training while his chest bone heals but said his surgeon has given him the all-clear regarding his heart.

Goldson spent six seasons at Rangers after joining from Brighton in 2018 and became a key part of Steven Gerrard's side.

The now 33-year-old played every minute of Rangers' unbeaten 2020/21 Scottish Premiership campaign and helped the club secure the league title without suffering a single defeat.

He also lifted the Scottish Cup and League Cup during his time at Ibrox before eventually leaving Rangers in 2024.
