Chukwuemeka gave Niko Kovac another reason to unleash him
Borussia Dortmund star Carney Chukwuemeka's stock on the international stage keeps rising. He made his debut for Austria in March this year, marking the occasion with a goal off the bench, played at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of the first Das Team side in the tournament since 1998, and on Sunday, bagged his second goal with the side too.
Once again, the midfielder was subbed into the match after the hour mark and Chukweuemeka duly repaid Austrian manager Ralf Rangnick's faith with their third goal of the evening, as Kosovo pulled one back late on from the penalty spot in a moment of consolation from the 3-1 defeat.
He came, he saw, he scored
Carney Chukwuemeka has made eight appearances with Austria since switching allegiance from England this year. Interestingly, he's come off the bench as a substitute on every single occasion. That's because Austria has realized the value he brings from his cameo appearances, and that notion was corroborated with him bagging another goal last weekend.
Despite a two-goal cushion to rely on heading into the last 30 minutes, Rangnick sought to keep the pressure on their visitors with three attack-minded substitutions: striker Saša Kalajdžić and midfielders, Alexander Prass and Chukwuemeka.
Just three minutes later, it reaped the exact dividend that Rangnick was looking for. Chukwuemeka initiated the attacking charge with a ball out on the left to Kalajdžić, who produced a clever backheel pass to bring Paul Wanner into the move.
His attempt was saved, but Chukwuemeka, who continued his run, latched onto the rebound from close range for 3-0. It was his second goal for Austria in just eight games as the 22-year-old delivered another promising cameo after creating two chances against Israel in their previous Nations League game, right after coming on.
Time for Kovac to unleash him?
Besides the goal, Chukwuemeka also completed all 10 of his passes, seven of which came in the opposition half as the player was an outlet in offensive areas, willing to receive passes and get involved at every opportunity.
Over the last two appearances, the 22-year-old has demonstrated his raw attacking quality which is certain to compel Dortmund manager Niko Kovac into reconsidering the gametime to offer him after playing him for just 25 minutes in the Bundesliga this season.
Chukwuemeka has shown the hunger that bodes well with a young and dynamic squad like that of BVB's which is aiming for trophies, while his breathtaking pace, ability to drop into pockets of space to become an outlet as well as clinically picking out teammates with short, incisive passes, could be valuable for Dortmund in the closing stages against sides employing a low-block.
