Chris Sutton left ‘confused’ by Celtic transfer decision after Landon Emenalo arrival

The 18-year-old completed a season-long loan move to Parkhead this week after Celtic had been searching for competition and cover for Kieran Tierney.

However, Emenalo arrives without a senior appearance for Chelsea and is currently sidelined through injury, leaving Sutton unconvinced by Celtic’s solution to a problem position.

“The left-back situation is also confusing,” Sutton said via Daily Record. “Landon Emenalo sounds like a top prospect but he’s 18 years old and he’s never played a senior game for Chelsea.

“He’s also injured for the next few weeks. Kieran Tierney shouldn’t be out long-term but it’s a big ask for a youngster to be the main back-up when you consider the amount of times Tierney doesn’t finish games.

“Celtic could be relying on a teenager to come in and see out huge matches in Scotland and in Europe.

“He might turn out to be a superstar but it’s a gamble, especially when there were pretty obvious options close to home with left-backs like Will Ferry at Dundee United, Motherwell’s Emmanuel Longelo and even the talk about Greg Taylor coming back. Any of them would have done the job.”

Celtic did make an approach to bring Taylor back to Parkhead on loan before the transfer deadline, but PAOK had no intention of allowing the 28-year-old to leave.

In the meantime, Liam Scales has deputised for Tierney at left-back, while new arrival Jordan Lotomba offers another option on either side of the defence.
