Xabi Alonso will breathe a sigh of relief now September has arrived, allowing him to focus on his job without constant questions about Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea’s transfer activity.

It has been another busy window at Stamford Bridge, with multiple arrivals strengthening a squad that finished 10th last season, while a major clear-out has seen several young signings move on after failing to establish themselves.

With the window now closed, what better time to look back at Chelsea’s summer business and assess whether Alonso has been given the squad he needs to move the club forward?

The signings made sense, adding valuable experience to a youthful squad. Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have raised the average age and brought standards, while Maxence Lacroix and Morgan Rogers bring proven Premier League quality and know-how.

Xabi Alonso has addressed several of the squad’s weaknesses, and while Enzo Fernandez’s departure has left a noticeable hole, the squad now looks far more balanced, blending youthful talent with experienced heads.

That balance has fuelled growing optimism among supporters, with many now believing Chelsea have the quality to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season.

Many Chelsea fans will be pleased to see the back of Enzo Fernandez, with his joint-British-record fee providing a significant boost to the club’s finances and leaving plenty of room for future investment. However, it is the way Chelsea have managed to move on their unwanted players for sizable profits that perhaps deserves the most credit, highlighting the effectiveness of BlueCo’s transfer strategy.

The sales of Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap were particularly notable after both were placed on the fringes of the squad following pre-season, with Xabi Alonso instead putting his faith in Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro.

The biggest surprise for me, however, was Tosin Adarabioyo’s move to rivals Tottenham, alongside Dario Essugo’s loan departure. With Chelsea relying on a three-man defence, the decision to lose another centre-back leaves the squad looking light in that area, while Essugo’s exit also removes a physical presence from midfield.

There are certainly some questions still to answer, but in alonso, we trust.

Rating the Chelsea window

Rating: B

A very good transfer window in my opinion. Had Chelsea brought in a midfielder to replace Fernandez, either before his departure or on deadline day, I would have given the window an A. As it stands, a B feels fair.

This window could prove hugely beneficial for Chelsea, both on the pitch and in their future transfer business. The squad now has a clearer identity, with a better blend of youth and experience, rather than simply collecting promising youngsters from academies around the world.
