Chelsea plan loan pathway for academy star Shim Mheuka
Chelsea are closing in on a new long-term contract for academy striker Shim Mheuka that will tie him to the club through 2033, with a loan move already being lined up for the 2026/27 season.
Chelsea close to tying Mheuka down before loan exit
Chelsea are close to agreeing a new long-term deal for Shumaira ‘Shim’ Mheuka, according to the Standard. The 18-year-old is expected to commit his future to the club before heading out on loan for the 2026/27 campaign.
Mheuka currently has a deal running until 2027, but Chelsea want to extend that considerably as they continue investing in the next generation of players coming through the academy. Nizaar Kinsella, writing for Yahoo Sports, reports the new terms will run through 2033 – an eye-catching commitment for a player who’s still a teenager.
A new contract paired with a loan move gives Mheuka time to gain valuable senior experience away from Stamford Bridge before he stakes a real claim on the Chelsea first team. Several EFL clubs, along with sides from across Europe, are already showing interest.
Chelsea believe regular first-team football elsewhere will be an important step in his development after an outstanding season at academy level. His rise mirrors a broader academy pathway the club has been leaning on, something we touched on when covering Chelsea’s academy players on the Australia tour.
Mheuka’s 2025/26 campaign with the Under-21s was genuinely remarkable. He finished as Premier League 2 Player of the Season, scoring 17 goals in 17 league appearances as he fired Chelsea’s U21s to the title, and added five goals in six UEFA Youth League games for good measure.
He’s already had a taste of senior football too. Since making his first-team debut against Astana in the Europa Conference League back in December 2024, Mheuka has featured nine times for the Blues as he continues picking up experience at the top level.
The striker has made his mark internationally as well. He’s scored 16 goals in 23 appearances for England’s Under-19s, a return that’s cemented his reputation as one of the best young forwards in the country.
His footballing journey started at Brighton & Hove Albion’s academy at just nine years old before he made the move to Chelsea at 15 – a path that’s now culminating in one of the longest contracts the club has handed a teenager.
Kinsella reports Mheuka has attracted interest from more than a dozen clubs across Europe and the Championship, with the exact structure of any loan still to be worked out. Chelsea’s forward line is stacked as things stand, with Joao Pedro, Danny Welbeck, Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha and Marc Guiu all on the books, plus 18-year-old Dastan Satpayev also rated highly internally.
That’s simply too many bodies for one dressing room, and it lines up with what we’ve already covered on Chelsea’s striker sales this summer. At least three of those forwards are expected to move on, but even then, regular minutes for Mheuka at Stamford Bridge look unlikely this season.
That’s why a temporary switch elsewhere is viewed as the sensible next step. Mheuka is understood to favour a move to mainland Europe over a switch within England, though nothing is finalised on destination just yet.
For now, the priority is getting the contract signed. Once that’s done, Chelsea can turn their full attention to finding a loan that actually guarantees Mheuka the game time his academy numbers suggest he deserves – a balancing act that ties into the club’s wider squad-management headache this summer, something we explored in our piece on Chelsea’s squad reduction plans.
