Chelsea omission does not stop Estevao playing in Premier League
Lead
Estevao Willian has not been included in Chelsea’s 20-man Premier League squad list, but he remains eligible to play for the club in the competition this season.
Why Estevao is missing from Chelsea’s squad list
Chelsea have submitted a 20-man squad list for the Premier League campaign, with Estevao absent from that list. Josh Acheampong, Jorrel Hato, Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra are also not included in the 20-player group, according to football.london.
The omission is explained by the Premier League’s rules for under-21 players. Those born on or after January 1, 2005 do not count towards the 25-man squad limit. Estevao and the other young players have been included on Chelsea’s unrestricted list of contracted players under 21 and scholars, which means they remain eligible to play in the English top flight.
News Summary
Chelsea could have named up to 25 players in their squad, with no more than 17 non-homegrown players, but submitted a list of 20. The list includes new signing Emi Martinez. Chelsea have 12 homegrown players in the squad and eight who do not meet that classification.
A player is classed as homegrown when registered with a club in England or Wales for at least three full seasons, or 36 months, before turning 21. That definition is separate from the under-21 exemption that applies to Estevao and other eligible younger players.
What it means for Estevao at Chelsea
For Estevao, the key point is that being left off the 20-man list does not prevent him from playing in the Premier League. His eligibility comes through the unrestricted under-21 and scholars list rather than a place in the senior squad list.
General changes to the squad list are restricted until after the mid-season transfer window closes. There is, however, an exception for clubs with vacant places: they can petition the Premier League Board for written consent to register a signed free agent, provided that player became a free agent before the summer transfer deadline.
Chelsea’s decision to name 20 players leaves vacant slots, while Estevao’s status is covered by the rules for qualifying under-21 players. The published squad list therefore does not change his Premier League eligibility this season.
