Chelsea Left Without Midfield Arrival After Camara Deal Fails
Lamine Camara’s £47.1m move from Monaco to Chelsea collapsed shortly after the transfer window closed at 23:00 BST, despite the Senegal midfielder completing a medical in France earlier that evening.
What actually happened
Camara will remain at Monaco after Chelsea’s proposed move for the 22-year-old fell through. Chelsea had two bids rejected by the Ligue 1 club before Monaco lowered their asking price, making a fee of about £47m more achievable.
Chelsea say Monaco informed them in writing that the deal would not go ahead and that no explanation was provided. The collapse came after Chelsea had fully expected the transfer to be completed.

According to a report by Nizaar Kinsella for BBC Sport, Camara completed his medical in France on Tuesday evening before the proposed switch collapsed shortly after the deadline. BBC Sport said it contacted Monaco for comment.
Why Monaco’s price suddenly moved
BBC Sport reported that Monaco’s position appeared to change when Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton came into renewed doubt. Sources with knowledge of the situation told the broadcaster they believed Monaco’s stance on Camara was influenced by the proposed Balogun transfer, although Chelsea said it was not given an explanation for the decision.
Sources in France had said Monaco needed to make a major sale during the summer and preferred to sell Balogun. Camara featured in Monaco’s 2-0 win over Marseille on Sunday evening, while Balogun was left out of the squad.
When doubts over Balogun’s Everton move emerged, Monaco’s asking price for Camara appeared to fall. Once Balogun’s transfer appeared to be back on track, Monaco appeared to reverse its decision to sell Camara.
The wider transfer context adds to Chelsea’s frustration. The club had already sanctioned Enzo Fernandez’s £125m move to Manchester City, described as a joint-British transfer record, in anticipation of Camara joining. With the Camara deal no longer going ahead, Chelsea have been left without the anticipated midfield arrival.
