Celtic transfer talks hit sticking point over Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny

Celtic remain in the hunt for Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny as they look to strengthen Martin O’Neill’s squad before the transfer deadline.

The 22-year-old emerged as a Hoops target over the weekend and is understood to have fallen down the pecking order at Selhurst Park following Pierre Sage’s arrival as Palace boss.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are continuing to pursue Devenny, although the structure of any potential deal remains a sticking point.

Palace would prefer a permanent sale for the Northern Ireland international, while Celtic are currently pushing to take him to Glasgow on loan.

That could prove complicated given Devenny has entered the final year of his Palace contract, meaning the Premier League club risk losing him for nothing next summer if they sanction a straightforward season-long loan.

A permanent move is reportedly valued at around £6million, with Serie A outfit Cagliari and Middlesbrough also credited with interest.

Devenny would offer O’Neill versatility, with the midfielder also capable of operating at wing-back.

Despite representing Northern Ireland internationally, he was born and raised in Scotland and spent time in Kilmarnock’s academy before joining Airdrieonians at 18.

His performances there earned him a move to Palace, initially for their Under-21 side, before former manager Oliver Glasner promoted him into the first-team picture.

Devenny subsequently made 60 appearances for the London club, with one of his standout moments coming when he converted the winning penalty against Liverpool in last year’s Community Shield at Wembley.
