The Hoops have been left short in the position following Alistair Johnston’s injury, although youngster Colby Donovan has impressed when called upon and Anthony Ralston remains available.

O’Neill has already acknowledged that Celtic are looking at defensive reinforcements before the transfer deadline, and Sugawara has emerged as a potential option.

Previous reports suggested Southampton valued the Japan international at just under £6million, with PSV Eindhoven also credited with an interest.

However, Celtic could now have the opportunity to bring the 26-year-old to Glasgow on loan rather than committing to a permanent transfer immediately.

Sugawara has been omitted from every Southampton matchday squad so far this season after spending last term on loan with Werder Bremen.

He was a regular in Germany, starting 29 Bundesliga matches and registering six assists.

Sugawara also created four big chances and recorded a top speed of 34.7km/h, offering an indication of the attacking threat and athleticism he could provide down Celtic’s right flank.

The defender already has experience of Premier League football and has featured across all three UEFA club competitions.
