BVB midfielder called up by Austria for Nations League fixtures
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has been called up to Austria's national team for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Head coach Ralf Rangnick has announced his squad of 27 players for the quadruple-header in the extended international window later this month that goes until the first weeek of October too.
Among them is Chukwuemeka, who only made his international debut with the side after switching allegiance from England in March.
He's already racked up six appearances with Das Team, and could be set to hit double-digits in the upcoming international window if Chukwuemeka plays in all four of their matches.
Austria are set to play Israel, Kosovo, Ireland and then Kosovo again for their first four of six Nations League fixtures in the group stages.
Chukwuemeka has racked up just 78 minutes of action with Borussia Dortmund in the new season, coming off the bench in all three games he's played in.
Signed on a permanent transfer from Chelsea last year after an initial six-month loan, the midfielder has struggled to break into the side as competition for places has gone up.
The BVB have made some new addition to their midfield department, with Joey Veerman joining from PSV Eindhoven although Jobe Bellingham and Felix Nmecha's partnership remains untouchable.
His versatility means the 22-year-old can also operate from the attacking midfield position, but that too is occupied by summer acquisition Konstantinos Karetsas right now.
Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury on the opening day of their Bundesliga campaign, which robbed the BVB of a promising attacking combo between him and his Greek compatriot Karetsas.
But even then, head coach Niko Kovac has rotated players in that position with Samuele Inacio, Fabio Silva and Marcel Sabitzer, while Chukwuemeka has remained on the bench.
Although it hasn't been detrimental to his chances on the international stage with Austria yet, it could be in near future if Chukwuemeka continues to struggle for first-team chances.
Das Team are set to begin their qualifying campaign for the Euro 2028 in March 2027 and he'd surely want to play a part in it.
Rangnick had called-up Chukwuemeka for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played in three of their four matches, coming off the bench each time and clocking just 81 minutes of action.
His Dortmund teammate Marcel Sabitzer will be missing in action after announcing a temporary break from international duties on account of workload management.
