Andrey Santos has been named in Brazil’s latest squad after a promising opening to his Manchester United career. His early performances at Old Trafford have caught the attention of the national squad, and the midfielder will now have another opportunity with Brazil.

Santos did not take part in the World Cup, which enabled United to complete their deal for the midfielder from Chelsea quickly in July. He was consequently available for the start of the club’s pre-season programme and impressed in the middle of the park.

A quiet but encouraging start

Santos made his first start of the season against Hull City alongside fellow new arrival Youri Tielemans in central midfield. United lost the match 0-2, but it provided an early look at the two new signings playing together in the engine room.

Since then, Santos has been among the substitutes for United’s last two Premier League matches after Kobbie Mainoo returned to full fitness. The change has left Santos competing for minutes in a midfield group that also includes Tielemans and Mainoo.

His early involvement in pre-season and first start of the campaign nevertheless gave him a platform after joining from Chelsea. The Brazil call-up arrives while he continues to work for a more regular place at club level.

What the call-up means

Brazil have selected Santos ahead of the end-of-September international break, when they have back-to-back friendlies against Australia. Carlo Ancelotti has chosen to give younger and fringe players an opportunity during the friendlies as he gathers further information on the available group.

Santos has made six appearances for Brazil, including two this year. His latest selection gives him the chance to add to that total and to strengthen his position within the national setup.

United teammate Matheus Cunha was not included in the same squad despite scoring three goals at the World Cup. Santos’ inclusion, by contrast, means he will be part of Brazil’s group for the upcoming fixtures.

Club Implications

For United, the international break comes at a point when Santos is seeking to build on his initial appearances. His pre-season displays and the Hull City start showed how quickly he was integrated after his July move, but his most recent Premier League involvement has come from the bench following Mainoo’s return to fitness.

The midfield competition gives Santos a clear challenge on his return from international duty. Tielemans was alongside him for the Hull City start, while Mainoo’s fitness has changed the immediate selection picture. Santos will look to use his time with Brazil to maintain momentum before returning to United.

The call-up does not settle his role for either club or country, but it gives the midfielder another opportunity to feature after an encouraging start to life at Old Trafford. Brazil’s upcoming friendlies offer the next stage of that process, while United’s midfield competition remains an important part of his first season.
