Historic club suffers demotion

The Paris Administrative Court has upheld sanctions imposed by the French Football Federation (FFF), formally expelling Bordeaux from national leagues down to Regional 1, the sixth tier of French football. The court ruled that financial guarantees provided by British investment fund Sparta Capital were insufficient to prevent administrative relegation from the fourth division. This devastating outcome pushes the historic club to the brink of judicial liquidation and complete structural collapse should Sparta decide to walk away.

Financial rescue plan rejected

The legal verdict reinforces earlier rulings from French sporting bodies, including the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), which rejected the club's financial recovery proposals.

Sparta had tabled an investment package worth €10.6 million to settle outstanding debts after purchasing the club from Gerard Lopez for a symbolic €1 in July. However, the court deemed the measures inadequate to stabilise operations following the 2024 bankruptcy proceedings and the subsequent forfeiture of the club's professional status.

Painful demise of champions

This steep decline marks the culmination of financial turmoil that accelerated after former Lille owner Lopez acquired Bordeaux in 2021, triggering consecutive demotions amid crippling debt. It represents a dramatic fall from grace for the six-time Ligue 1 champions, who last lifted the top-flight crown in 2009 under Laurent Blanc and boast four Coupe de France titles. The club also launched the careers of 1998 World Cup winners Zinedine Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu, and Christophe Dugarry during their run to the 1996 UEFA Cup final.

Amateur rebuild faces uncertainty

Bordeaux now face a gruelling rebuilding process in the amateur leagues, completely detached from the professional pyramid for the 2026-27 campaign. The club's survival rests heavily on Sparta's willingness to fund regional operations rather than withdrawing and triggering total liquidation. The coming weeks will prove pivotal in determining whether the storied institution can maintain its identity or disappear entirely from French football.
