Benjamin Arthur joins Portsmouth after Brentford reject Celtic approach

Former Celtic loanee Benjamin Arthur has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Brentford.

The defender, who spent the second half of last season at the Hoops, was unveiled by the Championship side on Wednesday ahead of their league opener against QPR at Fratton Park.

Arthur made six appearances during his four-month spell in Glasgow and impressed when called upon, including in away victories at Ibrox and Pittodrie and during a strong display against Motherwell.

He also played his part in Celtic’s Scottish Cup victory over Rangers at Ibrox as Martin O’Neill’s side went on to complete a domestic double.

The Hoops were reportedly interested in bringing Arthur back to Glasgow permanently this summer, but Brentford rejected their approach and instead favoured another loan move for the highly-rated youngster.

Arthur initially got his Celtic opportunity following Auston Trusty’s red card against Hibs, with the long-term absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers having left O’Neill short of options at centre-back.

The youngster has previously spoken about modelling his game on former Celtic star Virgil van Dijk, with his composure in possession among the qualities that stood out during his time in Scotland.

Carter-Vickers has since returned to action, while Arthur will now continue his development in the Championship.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho said on Arthur’s arrival: “We’re thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks.

“He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.

“Despite his relatively young age, he already has experience of top-flight football and we feel he can be a real asset as we look to progress in our third season in the Championship.
