Balazs Toth or Sam Johnstone – Celtic keeping goalkeeper options open
With transfer deadline day rapidly approaching, Celtic are frantically trying to get some much needed new recruits in the door to beef up Marin O’Neill’s squad, with a big challenge in both a domestic and European capacity laying in wait over the coming months…
With midfielders Joel Van Der Berg and Oliver Sorensen close to joining, that will ultimately bolster our ailing midfield ranks, but one of several other areas that’s in desperate need of attention is the goalkeeping department.
Numerous keepers have been linked with the club in the past few months including most recently English Championship shot stoppers Balazs Toth and Sam Johnstone.
Both Toth and Johnstone are the sort of quality and experienced goalkeepers that Celtic should be looking at, as they bid to bring in some much needed competition for Finland international shot-stopper Viljami Sinisalo.
Ross Doohan is the only other realistic back up to Sinisalo, so it’s evidently clear that we need to rectify that situation by acting swiftly and recruiting a new face to bolster our choices between the sticks.
It’s now been widely reported that Celtic are tracking both Toth and Johnstone as they look to recruit one of them before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday evening.
Hungarian international Tóth has travelled with the Blackburn Rovers squad ahead of their game against Lincoln City tonight. The 28 year-old reportedly wants to leave Blackburn, with several clubs across Europe now showing interest.
A Deadline Day move has NOT been ruled out, but Blackburn are yet to receive an offer that meets their reported £4 million valuation.
Celtic remain interested in Tóth, but contrary to earlier reports, Sky Sports News say Celtic have NOT made a bid for the goalkeeper yet.
With talks also on going for Sam Johnstone, it looks like Celtic are keeping their options open. One to watch today with Johnstone perhaps the more likely of the two to becoming a Celtic player. Things can change quickly though and of course we might end up with neither!
