Atlético Madrid storm into the top four: victory over Sociedad restores winning tune

Atlético Madrid rediscovered their winning touch, beating hosts Real Sociedad 3-0 today, Sunday, in the fifth round of the Spanish league.

The victory ended a rough patch. Atlético had lost 3-0 to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, then went down 2-1 to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, before returning to winning ways today.

Álex Grimaldo (84, penalty), Jonathan David (90) and Giuliano Simeone (90+5) scored Atlético's three goals.

The win lifted Atlético Madrid to 10 points and fourth place in the La Liga table, two points behind runners-up Real Madrid and five behind leaders Barcelona. Real Sociedad stayed on 7 points in 12th.

A goalless first half preceded the breakthrough. Both sides had spells of control in an even opening 45 minutes, though the hosts edged possession and clear-cut chances were rare.

Real Sociedad carved out the best of them, Sučić heading over from a corner and Sergio Gómez threatening from a free kick. Atlético replied through a Hjulmand header and a Kang In-lee strike.
