Andy Robertson is quietly making the same statement as Jan Paul van Hecke

Although new Tottenham Hotspur left back signing Andy Robertson started the season very poorly against Brentford and Newcastle United, the Scottish international returned to the starting lineup after Destiny Udogie's latest injury aggravation to produce a fine display against a familiar opponent of his, old Merseyside Derby rivals Everton.

Robertson could have had a much better day if Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel were more up for it on the left wing, but after being a big part of the problem offensively, Robbo looked a lot more active on the overlap and teased cross after cross to a Dominic Solanke led front line that would have surely put one of his deliveries in the back for the net had they been more up to it.

But at least the free agent signing from Liverpool looked alive again. It has been literal years since Robertson was one of the top left backs in the Premier League, and while calling him elite against Everton would be a massive stretch, he was actually a real positive for Spurs just weeks after looking like one of the absolute worst players in their squad.

Andy Robertson had two key passes for Spurs and played his passes crisply overall, proving to be a real asset on the attacking end in a way maybe Tottenham Hotspur themselves did not even anticipate.

While Robbo has not been as impressive as Jan Paul van Hecke, who was by far the best player on the pitch in Tottenham's 0-0 draw with Everton this weekend, he is making a similar statement as a new signing by greatly improving from a slow start.

Remember, van Hecke was even worse than Robertson on Matchday 1 against Brentford, and he has since turned it around from being one of Spurs worst players in the first game of the 2026/27 Premier League season to now being arguably their best player over the last two matches in clean sheet draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton.

Just as Van Hecke has made the statement to Roberto De Zerbi that he has vastly improved since a rough start and will be one of Spurs important players this season, Robertson's active display and creative output against the Toffees are a clear sign that he has something more to give to Spurs than they would have otherwise thought. He may not be as young or as impressive as Van Hecke, but he has bounced back quite strongly, too.
