Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is hopeful that Danny Welbeck can be involved in their Premier League opener against Fulham despite a minor injury issue.

Welbeck has been managing his workload in training but is expected to return ahead of the London derby at Craven Cottage.

“He can be involved,” Alonso said on the summer signing.

“He just needs a couple of days not training that much because of a little thing. But we are expecting him to be back on Saturday.

“We need to go day by day, but that’s the plan at the moment.”

Alonso also confirmed Chelsea’s players who featured at the World Cup are available for selection, although they may need additional time to reach full fitness.

The likes of Morgan Rogers joined up with the squad later than their team-mates following the tournament.

“Let’s see,” he said. “We will check, we will assess, but for sure because of the World Cup they came a little bit later and they would need maybe a little bit more time,” Alonso said.

“But they are for sure selectable for the line-up.”
