It’s been a few days since CF Montreal made official the signing of the Chilean Alexis Sanchez as a DP. This deal sparked some controversy, which we will examine in this article.

First, let’s set the contract details straight: Alexis Sanchez signed with the club through the end of the 2027 MLS sprint season. The agreement also includes an option for CF Montréal for the 2027-28 season.

This is according to CF Montréal’s official website. Now, the crucial thing is that the two-time Copa América champion signed as a Designated Player.

And that’s where people are not happy with this signing.

Was signing Alexis Sanchez as a DP the best option?

To begin with, fans need to understand that they're not bringing in the Alexis Sánchez who won the Copa América or the version we saw at Arsenal.

Keep in mind that he's 37 years old and far from that version of himself. However, that doesn't mean the Chilean forward can't be a great help both on and off the pitch.

Adding to that, CF Montreal is one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference, beign just ahead of Atlanta United.

Was it wrong for Montreal to sign Sanchez in hopes of improving their offense? Not necessarily. The real misstep was using a valuable DP spot on a veteran who could have been acquired on a standard contract.

This last season with Sevilla, Alexis Sanchez played 28 games, recording 4 goals and two assists. Although his numbers are not impressive, people should take into account that he is not a striker; he is considered an attacking midfielder, a number .10.

It's understandable why the Chilean is a Designated Player; for those who don't know, it means his salary exceeds the league's salary cap.

However, bringing in an aging player like the former FC Barcelona forward and using a DP spot on him could be questionable, especially when that spot could be used to bring in a veteran who is in better shape or younger.

One example could be Paul Pogba, whose contract expires in June next year. So, to clarify, Alexis Sanchez signing is not a bad call; the Impact needs a huge hand if they want to be free from the low standings of the table.

However, using a crucial DP spot on a player who may retire after this season is a questionable call, especially when that spot could be invested in a younger talent who could play for several more years.
