A new European union challenges Infantino: we want a different FIFA president
The Danish Football Union "DBU" confirmed today, Friday, that it will not back Gianni Infantino in the upcoming elections for the presidency of the International Federation of Association Football "FIFA", stressing that his tenure has triggered a "fundamental crisis of confidence" towards the organisation's leadership.
Fresh criticism has followed Infantino over his project, later abandoned, to privatise part of the World Cup.
According to the Danish Union, that attempt caused a "fundamental crisis of confidence towards FIFA's leadership". It noted that "the subsequent apologies" and "the withdrawal of the proposal" did not change its position.
The DBU withheld its support from Infantino at the last elections in 2022, and it will do the same at the elections scheduled for 18 March 2027, during FIFA's 77th Congress in Rabat, Morocco.
The Danish Union said: "The DBU, in cooperation with UEFA and our international colleagues, will seek to ensure that member associations, in the 2027 presidential elections, have a genuine choice and a credible alternative capable of uniting FIFA across the confederations, and rebuilding the trust that has been shattered".
Nominations for the FIFA presidential elections must be submitted by 18 November. So far no candidate has emerged to challenge Infantino, according to the French newspaper L'Équipe.
Its stance is clear, the Danish Union insists: it wants to "see a new president at the head of FIFA".
The DBU has also aligned itself with UEFA's position on a possible boycott of upcoming FIFA competitions, should the international federation fail to provide the "necessary guarantees" to keep private-sector investors out of its tournaments.
