"A decision that would have pleased everyone": Gomez says Al-Hilal have this advantage

Al-Khaleej coach José Gomes has hit out at the congested schedule of the Saudi Roshn Pro League as the 2026-2027 season gets under way. The Portuguese pointed out that his side will meet Al-Hilal in the third round having had less rest than their opponents.

Speaking after Al-Khaleej's goalless draw with Al-Shabab on Saturday in the second round, Gomes argued that a match every three days is far from normal.

The Al-Khaleej coach told Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah: "It is a little strange, and those responsible for preparing the league schedule are certainly facing difficulty in organising the matches because of the Gulf Cup and the Asian Cup."

"Had the league started a week earlier, it would have been more comfortable for everyone," he added. "We are not lucky, because we will face Al-Hilal after they had five days of rest, but on the other hand all the clubs are suffering from the congested schedule."

Assessing the Al-Shabab clash

Gomes called the match against Al-Shabab an even affair. "It was a tactical encounter, and we were excellently organised defensively, and we carried out what was required of us," he said.

"The humidity was very high, and it may have affected the quality of the match," he added. "Had the weather conditions been different, we might have seen a better level."

"The draw reflects how close the two sides are in level," he continued.

A positive point

A share of the spoils suited Gomes just fine at the start of the season. "I see it as a positive point, as the season will be difficult, and we have outstanding players and a good team," he said.

"We went into the match to win, but Al-Shabab also have players who enjoy high quality," he concluded.
