Tuesday night marks the end of one of football’s most glittering eras as Lionel Messi pulls on an Argentina shirt for the 208th and final time.

Benin are the visitors for Messi’s farewell appearance, and it’s sure to be a hugely emotional occasion at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

And 208 is just one of copious significant numbers Messi will have posted representing his country over the last 21 years…

Messi’s Argentina career in numbers

208 caps

Messi won his 207th Argentina cap in this summer's World Cup final

One of only four players in the history of the game to earn 200 or more caps, Messi’s international career began back in August 2005 when he came off the bench in a friendly against Hungary in Budapest.

However, according to FIFA records, his debut lasted a mere 47 seconds: the 18-year-old was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after catching Vilmos Vanczak with his arm.

That was his first of two sendings-off for Argentina, the second coming 14 years later for clashing with Chile’s Gary Medel at the Copa America.

Messi made his first international start in a home World Cup qualifying win over Peru in October 2005 and was into double figures for caps by 2007.

He brought up a century of caps against Jamaica at the 2015 Copa America and surpassed Javier Mascherano to become Argentina’s record appearance-maker with his 148th cap in the same competition six years later, bagging a brace in a 4-1 victory over Bolivia.

His historic 200th cap came at the 2026 World Cup – and he marked the milestone in style with a hat-trick as Argentina swept aside Algeria 3-0 in their tournament opener, temporarily equalling Miroslav Klose for the most goals in World Cup history.

125 goals

It just wouldn’t be right if Messi didn’t sign off by adding to this tally, would it? But in any case, he’s racked up 125 international goals since opening his account against Croatia 20 years ago.

In 2016, he overtook Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s all-time top scorer with his 48th international goal: a free-kick in a 4-0 thrashing of the USA in the Copa America semi-finals.

And he reached the 100-goal mark in typical Messi fashion, hitting a hat-trick in a 7-0 friendly drubbing of Curacao in March 2023.

His 125th and most recent Argentina goal came as he inspired a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the 2026 World Cup last 16, bagging the equaliser.

11 hat-tricks

Messi scored five goals in one game against Estonia in 2022

The aforementioned hat-trick against Algeria was Messi’s 11th in an Argentina shirt and broke the record for the most in international football – one more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi has scored hat-tricks against 10 different opponents, with Bolivia the unfortunate team on the receiving end of two of them.

Ten of those hat-tricks have ended at three goals, but on one occasion, Messi racked up five goals in a game – all five of them as Argentina thumped Estonia 5-0 in a friendly in Pamplona, Spain in June 2022.

34 World Cup appearances

Messi comfortably tops the list for the most matches played in World Cups, making his 34th and final appearance in the competition in the 2026 final – seven more than his great contemporary Cristiano Ronaldo in second place.

Along with Ronaldo, Messi is also one of just two players to feature at six separate World Cups, having debuted in the 2006 edition.

He’s also a three-time finalist – famously captaining Argentina to glory in 2022 – joining Cafu, Lothar Matthaus, Ronaldo Nazario and Pierre Littbarski in that exclusive club.

21 World Cup goals

Messi's 21st World Cup goal was a crucial equaliser against Egypt

Messi was ultimately edged out by Kylian Mbappe in a thrilling battle for all-time World Cup goalscoring supremacy this summer, but he was briefly the leading marksman in the history of football’s most prestigious competition, concluding his career on that stage with 21 goals to his name.

Still, he retires from international football as the top South American scorer in World Cups, six goals ahead of Ronaldo Nazario and nine ahead of Pele.

12 World Cup assists

But Messi does hold the record for the most World Cup assists, moving to 12 as he set up four goals this summer – including both as Argentina recovered from a goal down to defeat England in the semi-finals.

Fittingly, his idol Diego Maradona – perhaps the only player who can rival him for the title of Argentina’s greatest of all time – sits second on the list with eight.

1 World Cup win

Messi finally got his hands on the World Cup in 2022

In the eyes of many fans, Messi confirmed his status as the greatest of all time by captaining Argentina to their third World Cup crown in Qatar in 2022.

Typically scintillating throughout the tournament, he capped it all by bagging a brace and scoring in the shootout as the Albiceleste triumphed against France in arguably the greatest World Cup final ever.

The following year, Messi deservedly won a record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or, an accolade he's got his hands on at least three more times than anyone else.

2 World Cup Golden Balls

Scooping the prize in 2014 and 2022, Messi is the only player ever to win two official World Cup Golden Ball awards as the player of the tournament.

He also finished second in the voting at his final World Cup this summer, also placing second for the Golden Boot in 2022 and 2026.

2 Copa America titles

Messi captained Argentina to his first of two Copa America victories in 2021

In addition to his crowning achievement of World Cup glory in 2022, Messi captained Argentina to two Copa America triumphs.

His first came in 2021 when Argentina became continental champions for a record-equalling 15th time by beating arch-rivals Brazil on their own patch at the iconic Maracana in Rio.

And he starred again as the Albiceleste claimed the record outright by retaining their title three years later, this time defeating Colombia in the final in Miami.

16 Argentine Footballer of the Year awards

Aside from his enviable collection of eight Ballons d’Or, Messi has been named Argentina Footballer of the Year a whopping 16 times – at least 12 more than any of his compatriots.

First winning the award as an 18-year-old after starring in Argentina’s 2005 World Youth Championship success, Messi took the honour seven years in a row between 2007 and 2013, and eight in a row between 2015 and 2022.

1 Olympic gold medal

While his appearances don’t count towards his official caps total – countries are represented by U23 teams in Olympic football – Messi is the proud owner of an Olympic gold medal.

He scored twice en route to the final at the 2008 Beijing Games, where Argentina beat Nigeria to win gold.
