Barcelona Accept €50m PSG Offer for Ferran Torres

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement in the region of €50m for the transfer of Ferran Torres. The 26-year-old forward is expected to travel to Paris to complete the remaining formalities, with the deal set to bring his time at Barcelona to an end.

The agreement involves no add-ons, while documentation between the two clubs is still to be exchanged. The transfer is expected to be made official after the remaining administrative steps and Torres’ medical examination with PSG are completed.

The sale addresses Torres’ contract situation at Barcelona. Any renewal would have required a payment of around €8m to Manchester City under a clause from his January 2022 move, which was worth an initial €55m plus up to €10m in add-ons. Sources familiar with the situation said sporting director Deco was reluctant to work on a new deal because of the financial implications, while senior club sources said Barcelona were open to a sale rather than risk Torres leaving on a free transfer next summer, when his contract expires.

Torres arrives at PSG after a successful World Cup campaign with Spain. Primarily used as a substitute by head coach Luis de la Fuente, he scored the winning goal in the 106th minute of the final against Argentina at MetLife Stadium last month.

In 207 appearances for Barcelona, Torres scored 65 goals and provided 23 assists, while winning three league titles. He featured 49 times in all competitions last season and scored 21 goals.

If completed, Torres’ departure would leave Barcelona without both of their centre-forward options from last season, after Robert Lewandowski joined the Chicago Fire following the expiration of his contract. Barcelona have added Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi to their forward line, but the search for a new No. 9 has become more pressing. There is growing pessimism over a move for Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, with three weeks remaining in the transfer window.
