Walsall’s capitulation of a 12-point lead made the headlines in an intriguing battle for promotion from League Two last season, with the Saddlers eventually missing out on a third-tier berth completely as Doncaster Rovers took the title.
This year, the promoted quartet of Doncaster, Port Vale, Bradford City, and AFC Wimbledon are replaced by Crawley Town, Bristol Rovers, Cambridge United, and Shrewsbury Town, while Barnet and Oldham make the step up to the EFL at the expense of Carlisle and the turbulent Morecambe.
Dons installed as title favourites
MK Dons suffered their worst-ever finish last season as they limped to 19th in League Two, but some shrewd summer moves leaves them as favourites to lift the title and make a return to League One this term.
Arguably the biggest coup for The Dons is the arrival of Paul Warne as manager, who has won promotion four times in his nine-year managerial career, most recently taking Derby County back to the Championship in 2023/24.
Warne’s arrival has paved the way for some promising business in the transfer window, with Aaron Collins the highlight signing after notching 19 goals for Bolton in League One last season.
Collins is joined by former Bolton team-mate Gethin Jones, while Will Collar, Callum Paterson, and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing arrive with plenty more experience at a higher level.
With a heap of ambition, a promotion specialist at the helm, and plenty of eye-catching arrivals, MK Dons look good for a title challenge.

Spireites set for success
Chesterfield suffered play-off heartbreak last season, losing in the semi-finals after a fantastic run to end the season.
They lost just one of their final 13 games in their first season back in the EFL, and they look set to push on this term.
The Spireites were the second-highest scorers in the division and have strengthened their ranks with Lee Bonis, who managed 11 goals for Dutch side ADO Den Haag last season.
Other additions, which include Ryan Stirk, Zach Hemming, Will Grigg, Paddy Madden, and John Fleck, provide a mixture of proven League Two quality and experience, and that could make them big players in the promotion battle.
The Bees to fly through the ranks
The last few seasons have been characterised by non-league clubs rising through the ranks at a rapid pace after achieving promotion, and Barnet could be the latest name to make the successful jump up to League Two.
The Bees registered 102 points on their way to the National League title last season, returning to the EFL for the first time since their 2017/18 relegation.
Manager Dean Brennan has added plenty of EFL experience to their ranks through the summer, and striker Callum Stead will be relishing the chance to prove his worth in the fourth tier.
