The Barcelona and Elche crisis reaches parliament: an urgent official investigation after Catalonia boils over
Political escalation and widespread anger
The Spanish National Police have opened an internal investigation into a security operation around the Martínez Valero stadium, carried out shortly before Elche's La Liga clash with Barcelona. The trigger was the arrest of a Barcelona fan carrying the Catalan independence flag, the "Estelada".
Sources from the Spanish Government Office in Catalonia confirmed to Spanish agency Europa Press that the probe followed a statement issued by Barcelona. Government delegate in Catalonia Carlos Prieto had been in contact with his counterpart in the Valencia region, Pilar Bernabé, who confirmed an investigation into the events "in preparation for taking the appropriate decisions".
Barcelona's statement condemned what the club described as the "disproportionate use of force" against its members and fans. The club also voiced its regret at the confiscation of "Estelada" flags, insisting the flag is a legal symbol and that displaying it is a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression, and cannot in itself be considered incitement to hatred or violence.
A political row has erupted in the hours since. The "Junts" and "Republican Left of Catalonia" parties are demanding that the Spanish Interior Ministry explain the operation and the seizure of the flags.
"Junts" registered a set of questions in the Spanish parliament, pressing for clarity on whether an internal investigation had been opened to identify the police officers involved, and whether the Interior Ministry had issued specific instructions on handling the "Estelada" and other political symbols at sporting events.
The "Republican Left of Catalonia" went further, submitting a request to summon Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska before parliament's interior committee to explain what it called "unjustified" police violence against Barcelona fans in Elche.
On the pitch, Barcelona ran out 5-0 winners. Raphinha struck twice, with Fermín López and Karim Adeyemi also grabbing a brace apiece as the Catalans opened their 2026-2027 La Liga campaign.
