Strong gesture: Barcelona star addresses Valencia fans after big win

With their third five-goal game and fourth win in the fourth match, Barca comfortably defended top spot.

The defending champions also capitalised on Real Madrid's slip-up against Betis Sevilla this weekend, cruising to a 5-0 (2-0) win at Valencia.

Rodri made his first start after his marquee arrival, and several stars in a lively Barca side enjoyed an excellent afternoon. Lamine Yamal struck twice, Dani Olmo came off the bench to supply two assists, and Fermin scored once and set up two more. Raphinha and Pedri were also on target.

Pedri drew the biggest applause of all. The 23-year-old produced such an inspiring display that the home crowd in Valencia saluted him with applause and chants.

"The fans at Mestalla applauded me despite Valencia's difficult situation? I have to thank everyone," Pedri told reporters after the match. "When the fans of the opposing team celebrate you, it is always something special, and I wish them all the best for the season."

Valencia could badly use that support. After four matches, the six-time Spanish champions and Champions League finalists in 2000 and 2001 sit bottom of the table in Spain with just one point and one goal.
