Sources: Newcastle and Real Madrid step up interest in €60 million midfielder
Nico Gonzalez has been linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer.
The Spanish midfielder was signed from Porto in February 2025 for a fee of €60 million.
The 24-year-old is under contract until 2029 and currently carries a market valuation of around €40 million, according to Transfermarkt. Having earned 11 caps for Spain’s U21 side, González has recently attracted attention from both Premier League and La Liga clubs.
Nico Gonzalez could leave Manchester City
After failing to land Rodri, Real Madrid have added González to their shortlist and are also weighing up Adam Wharton. This has brought the Spaniard firmly into the spotlight at the Bernabéu, while Newcastle United have also entered the race.
Sources have informed CaughtOffside that the Magpies have opened exploratory talks with City, and although no formal bid has yet been tabled, the club view González as a potential replacement for Tonali and Guimarães, who both departed earlier in the window. Manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to give the midfielder only 11 minutes in the Community Shield against Arsenal further highlighted his limited role at the Etihad.
Newcastle’s priority is to secure an experienced midfielder before their season opener against Liverpool. The club believe González could reach his full potential with regular minutes and is seriously considering a move. City’s asking price remains unclear, but negotiations are expected to start around his €40 million valuation.
