That defensive record is about to face its sternest examination yet. Barcelona’s next league fixture brings Rayo Vallecano to Camp Nou, an opponent that made life distinctly uncomfortable for Hansi Flick’s side in both meetings last season.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, this upcoming clash could prove to be the toughest test Barcelona have faced so far this season. The reasoning is straightforward: Rayo have a recent history of frustrating this Barça side more than most.
Flick’s team has looked considerably more assured at the back through the opening two rounds, with García protecting his goal and the outfield defenders showing a level of organisation that was not always present last season. Whether that structure holds up against a side set up specifically to disrupt it, as Barcelona’s evolving defensive setup will need to answer, is precisely what makes this fixture a meaningful early marker rather than a routine home date.
Rayo’s recent record against Barcelona backs up the concern. In the away fixture last season, Rayo Vallecano held Flick’s side to a 1-1 draw, denying the Catalans a win on the road. When the sides met again at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona only narrowly came away with a 1-0 victory, hardly the kind of comfortable scoreline the Blaugranes have produced against most opponents this season.
That pattern is what makes the upcoming meeting significant for both the team collectively and García individually.
