Only one absentee: big celebration for Barcelona's goalscoring hero in Elche's stronghold

The tribute will be repeated next Thursday

Those inside the Martínez Valero celebrated Spain's triumph at the last World Cup, saving a special tribute for the Barcelona players crowned world champions this summer after beating Argentina in the final.

Joan García, Eric García, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi, Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo all took a warm reception from Elche's fans and players before kick-off against Barcelona. Each of the champions collected a commemorative plaque bearing the Elche crest.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the seven Barcelona players were honoured on the Martínez Valero pitch. Rodri, a World Cup winner and one of Barcelona's marquee summer signings, missed out. He did not travel with the team as he continues his physical training.

The tribute marked the success of a generation that dragged Spain back to the top, one with a strong Barcelona core.

Barcelona will pick up the celebrations next Thursday. Before the postponed match against Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou, the champions will get a lavish reception on their own ground and in front of their own fans.

The World Cup itself will also visit Barcelona's stadium to honour eight players from the winning squad.
