FC Barcelona do not see signing a new central defender in January as a priority at this moment, despite making late attempts to sign a long-term central defender in the summer window.

With still time for the winter window, sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick are adopting a calculated wait-and-see strategy. The sporting department want to watch how the early months of the season go before they decide to spend in January.

Faith in the core

While at a glance, Barcelona appear light in the central defence department with Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen being the only recognized names who play as center backs on paper, Flick sees no problem with what he has on his hands.

Pau Cubarsi: The teenage phenomenon is the only certainty in Barcelona's back line, he has continued his World Cup form into league and championship football.

Gerard Martin: Having adapted brilliantly to play as a central defender, he has made himself a key man in the defensive system, and is adored by the coaching staff for being adaptable and composed on the ball.

Andreas Christensen: Having put his injury issues behind him, the Danish defender offers veteran reading of the game and comfortable progression on the ball from deeper positions.

Elsewhere in the squad, Barcelona boast defensive versatility that eases the consciences of the coaching staff even further. Although both Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde have been used at right-back respectively, they remain extremely high-quality central options should there be fatigue or injury on other areas of the squad.

Autumn's performances will determine winter strategy.

Barcelona will assess their defence all through autumn and will be more than happy to either invest all of their capital in to a top class centre back for the summer of 2027 window. Alternatively, if they find themselves battling with injury or significant downturn in performances, the club will not hesitate to sign a centre back in January.
