Left the national team and returned to Barcelona: official statement on Eric Garcia's injury
What is the nature of the injury?
Eric Garcia has left the Spain camp after feeling discomfort in his left knee during the warm-up before the clash with England. The blow disrupted Luis de la Fuente's plans, but medical examinations ruled out a serious injury.
According to the Spanish Football Federation, Garcia underwent tests after feeling the discomfort. The staff then pulled him from the national team camp to avoid any risks, calling up Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand as his replacement.
Garcia had been set to start against England at Wembley. The discomfort he felt during the warm-up forced a last-minute change, with Marc Pubill slotting into the starting line-up in his place.
The examinations revealed no serious injury, yet the medical staff preferred not to gamble on the player with the national team's upcoming commitments looming. Garcia will return to Barcelona in the coming hours to continue monitoring his condition.
That decision brings relief to Barcelona and Hansi Flick. The Spanish defender has become one of the key elements in the German coach's plans since the start of the season.
At right-back, Garcia has edged out Jules Kounde to establish himself as first choice, starting all 6 of his La Liga matches so far.
His understanding with Lamine Yamal on the right side, along with his defensive level, is another reason Flick has leaned on him. Barcelona now prepare for a packed month, beginning with the clash against Getafe after the international break, then travelling to face Galatasaray, Real Betis and Paris Saint-Germain, before facing Real Madrid in the season's first Clasico on 25 October at the Spotify Camp Nou.
