Huijsen on the derby: if the mistakes had favoured Real Madrid there would have been a huge uproar

The Merengue defender directed his darts of criticism at video technology in particular

Dean Huijsen has hit out at VAR for failing to intervene in the incident involving Kang-in Lee and Fede Valverde during the recent Madrid derby, which Los Blancos lost 2-1 on home soil in La Liga.

Huijsen told reporters: "This is unfortunate, because we have video technology to stop this play-acting and to prevent players from rolling around on the pitch. Since Valverde did not stay on the ground and feign injury for 5 minutes, the other player did not receive a red card, and that is unfortunate. But the video technology should know that anyway."

The Spain international went on: "I do not understand why the video technology did not intervene on the foul against Valverde. It may have been an error by the referee, human errors do happen, but if that is the case, what is the point of having video technology? If the incidents we saw against Atletico Madrid had happened the other way round, the uproar would have been enormous."

Several refereeing calls sparked wide controversy in that derby. The most glaring was the failure to send off Kang-in Lee for his challenge on Valverde. Huijsen himself then saw red in the second half after the referee awarded Atletico Madrid a penalty for a foul on Giuliano Simeone.

Real Madrid confirmed last Tuesday that medical tests had revealed Valverde suffered a third-degree sprain in his left ankle. The club stopped short of putting a timeframe on his absence, noting only that his condition would be monitored. Press reports, though, suggested the Uruguayan could be sidelined for several weeks.

Defeat to Atletico dropped Real Madrid to fourth in La Liga on 15 points, 6 behind leaders Barcelona, who boast a perfect record of 21 points from 7 rounds.
