Dual faced? Why Gil Marin must exclude himself from Barcelona-Alvarez talks
The Julian Alvarez and FC Barcelona transfer drama has gone far beyond a mere window operation, taking on the characteristics of an emerging scandal that calls for transparency in institutional decision-making. In recent times it has become clear that Miguel Angel Gil Marin has placed an absolute veto on the Argentine's transfer to Barcelona and has tried to push through a Premier League move instead without the slightest contribution from the president of the competition, Javier Tebas.
The problem, of course, is none other than that Gil Marin exercises multiple roles: in addition to that of being the CEO of Atletico, he is the First Vice President of LaLiga as well.
A clear conflict of interest
As First Vice President of LaLiga, Gil Marin has an institutional and executive responsibility for the integrity of the competition and for tending to the commercial and sporting interests of all the clubs, including, of course, FC Barcelona.
As CEO of Atletico, the only responsibility is to care about the individual competitive advantage of his own club. By leveraging his institutional weight to block a marquee player from joining a domestic rival while actively steering that same talent abroad, Gil Marin creates an ethical and governance contradiction that is nearly impossible to justify.
It’s clear that asking member clubs to maintain neutrality with respect to conflicts of interest, while acting as an interested party at institutional level in favor of your club’s commercial interests seems contradictory to what one preaches.
Two sports governance alternatives
Options for Gil Marin to maintain good governance, as well as the institutional respect owed to any member club, Gil Marn can:
1. Resign from his post as First Vice President of LaLiga.
2. Formally recuse himself from any negotiation related to Julian Alvarez whether it be with FC Barcelona, Atletico, or any other club.
Until clear lines are drawn between league governance and club leadership, the integrity of LaLiga's executive decision-making remains open to severe challenge
