Denzel Dumfries' time as a Real Madrid starter has to come to an end sooner or later

Real Madrid looked good on the offensive end and bad on the defensive side against Inter on Tuesday, but they were able to ultimately win on the night and take the three points home.

However, there were still a couple of performances which left a lot to be desired for Real Madrid fns, and one of them was that from Denzel Dumfries.

Despite Real Madrid’s dominance in attack, Dumfries did not really provide the team with a whole lot going forward, and his defensive interventions were not enough to give him the tag of having a good performance.

Most of Real Madrid’s players were good, and while Dumfries was not terrible, he certainly was the worst player on the pitch for the club. His man, Carlos Augusto, was the one who was able to get past him and score the goal for Inter in the hopes of kickstarting a counter-attack, and generally speaking, the player did not look all that impressive.

In fact, there has only been one game out of the five from this season where Real Madrid have had a great performance from the right-back, and that was the one game Dumfries was on the bench for.

Denzel Dumfries is a good back-up, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is the better player

Trent Alexander-Arnold started in his place against Malaga, and looked brilliant on and off the ball. With Dumfries, you get a lot of physical attributes and more assurance defensively, but in terms of the quality of the player at right-back, Trent is the better option, and he has to now keep his place in the XI at all costs.

Dumfries has not looked terrible in any of these games, but out of four starts, all of them have been mediocre for the Dutch full-back. He would make an excellent back-up to Trent, which is presumably what he was brought in to do in the first place, and would obviously have some great performances here and there, but so far, he has been the worse of the two full-backs at the club.

He may be the more natural right-back out of the two, but Dumfries has not impressed nearly enough to keep his place in the starting XI. There will be some games where he is the right choice to start over Trent, but this has to end now. Trent is Real Madrid’s best right-back, and he needs to get back to playing in that position consistently.
