A unique achievement: Hamza Abdelkarim writes his name into Barcelona's history

Young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim has written himself into Barcelona's history, becoming the first Egyptian to wear the first-team shirt in an official match during Monday evening's clash with Rayo Vallecano in the third round of the Spanish league.

German head coach Hansi Flick sent Abdelkarim on in the 86th minute for Brazilian Raphinha. It marked the Egyptian forward's first official appearance in a Catalan shirt, weeks after his promotion to the first team on the back of striking displays in pre-season.

For Egyptian football, the moment is a landmark. No Egyptian had ever featured in a competitive match for Barcelona, one of the biggest and most decorated clubs on the planet.

His appearance came on a night when Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano 5-2, turning a one-goal deficit into a deserved victory.

Rayo struck early through Sergio Camello. Raphinha levelled, then Lamine Yamal put the hosts ahead with a superb goal, and Barcelona made it three when Florian Lejeune turned into his own net. Camello pulled one back for the visitors before Raphinha completed his brace in the 71st minute, and Yamal added a fifth in the dying moments.

Abdelkarim's competitive bow comes just months after his move from Al Ahly to Barcelona. He caught the eye quickly inside the Catalan club and convinced Hansi Flick to hand him a place in the first-team squad, before the German coach gave him the chance to make history with his debut in the Spanish league.
