€3 million and a loan: Barcelona agree deal for new goalkeeper
Barcelona plans for the future
Barcelona are closing in on an important deal to secure their long-term future between the posts, with Wojciech Szczesny's contract set to expire in June 2027.
According to Sport, citing the Croatian website Index HR, Barcelona and Fenerbahce have struck a preliminary agreement over Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic for around 3 million euros, plus a set of variables.
The Spanish newspaper says talks between the two clubs are well advanced. A final close, though, has not yet been reached.
Barcelona's plan
The Catalans want to complete the signing and then loan Livakovic to Dinamo Zagreb for a season. He would return at the end of that spell to serve as second choice behind Joan Garcia, the man Barcelona are counting on as their number one.
Other options remain on the table. Barcelona could loan Livakovic to a different club, or even register him in the first-team squad this season, should the salary cap rules allow it.
The player's agent's role
Livakovic's agent, Andy Bara, is playing a key part in the negotiations. His strong relationship with Barcelona has helped shape a formula that could satisfy all parties.
The keeper's displays at the 2026 World Cup have also convinced the club's sporting management of his worth, especially as Barcelona want to settle the deal early rather than wait for Szczesny to leave.
Previous experience in Spain
Livakovic knows the Spanish league. He joined Girona on loan from Fenerbahce, but never featured in a single match before the deal was cut short.
That spell soured his relationship with Girona coach Michel. The coach later explained that Livakovic had told him he did not wish to continue or to play, because he wanted to keep his options open before the World Cup and look for a new club. Marc-Andre ter Stegen took his place at Girona after his departure.
