Aston Villa continued their quest for Europa League glory with a narrow first-leg win over Lille in the last 16, thanks to Ollie Watkins’ first goal in Europe this season.
On an evening of few clear-cut goalscoring opportunities, Villa held their nerve to get themselves in front at the halfway point of the tie.
It’s now eight wins out of nine for Unai Emery’s men in the 2025/26 Europa League as they look to reach a third straight continental quarter-final – and he aims to take a step closer to lifting the trophy for a record-extending fifth time.

Chances were at a huge premium in a cagey first half at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, each side managing only one shot and sharing possession almost equally during the opening 30 minutes, with neither able to wrestle control of the midfield battle.
Lille carved out a great opening shortly before the break, Tiago Santos whipping a teasing cross towards the near post for Olivier Giroud – in his heyday such a potent aerial threat but, now 39, unable to direct his header on target.
Romain Perraud then forced Emi Martinez into the night’s first save with a dipping effort from outside the box, but Villa were able to ride out this mini Lille storm to get through to half-time unscathed – though having been unable to penetrate the hosts’ robustly organised back line.

Lille lost highly experienced midfield linchpin and captain Benjamin Andre through injury at half-time, with 18-year-old Ayyoub Boaddi coming on is his place – before suffering another injury blow at the start of the second half, winger Gaetan Perrin pulling up and having to be replaced by Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Then, just after the hour mark, Villa dealt the hosts their biggest blow yet, Ollie Watkins breaking the deadlock with an expertly lobbed header over goalkeeper Berke Ozer from just inside the box after Emi Buendia had defied his short stature to get his head on Ezri Konsa’s long ball over the top.
Martinez was called into action again, getting down to save Fernandez-Parlo’s curling shot after the Lille substitute drifted in from the left, but Villa were largely untroubled in seeing the game out.
The Premier League side might have added a second goal late on, Buendia sending an acrobatic effort just wide of the far post, but Villa had to settle for a slender advantage to take into next Thursday’s second leg at Villa Park.
Lille are by no means out of the contest as they try to make it to a first-ever European quarter-final: Villa have lost four of their last even home matches in all competitions.
Next up for Villa is a crucial league trip to top-four rivals Manchester United on Sunday, while Bruno Genesio’s Lille travel to Rennes in Ligue 1.

Watkins proved that a quiet outing for a striker doesn’t mean a bad one: the England international attempted just one shot – and it turned out to be the winning moment.
Showing great invention to beat the goalkeeper with his head, Watkins ended a seven-match goal drought and took his tally for the campaign to nine in all competitions.
