  • Rangers yet to win in the Scottish Premiership this season

  • Genk unbeaten in last three away games; scored in all three

  • Recommended bet: Draw and both teams to score

Rangers manager Russell Martin eased the immense pressure being felt around the club with a 2-0 home win over Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday.

However, the Gers boss is still under fire from the club's passionate and vocal fanbase and will be determined to pick up another victory on Thursday in the Europa League against Genk.

The Blue and Whites arrive at Ibrox looking to bounce back from consecutive home losses and Genk have only won two of their eight league games this season to sit 14th in the Belgian Pro League.

Team news

Rangers will be without full-back Max Aarons, who is suspended after picking up a red card against Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying.

Summer signing Youssef Chermiti is pushing for a start, though he may have to settle for a place on the bench after Bojan Miovski scored against Hibs.

Nedim Bajrami is ineligible having been left out of Rangers' Europa League squad.

Genk have been without first-choice goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge since July due to a long-term back issue.

Daan Heymans is also a doubt with an ankle problem.

The stats

This will be the first ever meeting between Rangers and Genk, but the Scottish club have already faced Belgian opposition this season, losing 3-1 at home and 6-0 away to Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying.

This will be Genk's first ever game against a Scottish opponent in European competition and they are unbeaten in each of their last three games when meeting a team for the first time in major European competition.

The Gers have won their opening game in four of the last five Europa League campaigns, with the exception coming with a 2-0 home defeat by Lyon in September 2021.

This will be Genk's first appearance in the Europa League since the 2021/22 campaign – the only season in which they failed to get out of the group stage in the competition.

Genk have won their first game to nil in four of their five previous appearances in the competition.

Prediction

Rangers are yet to win in the Scottish Premiership and a growing section of the fanbase are calling for Martin to be sacked.

The club has earned wins in the Scottish League Cup, however, so a positive Europa League run could also boost confidence and help the manager early in his tenure.

The Gers defeated Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying, but were then humiliated by Brugge.

Martin and his players have a massive point to prove and, while a win over Genk likely would not dissuade fans from calling for the manager's head, it would be a step in the right direction.

Genk are also struggling in the Belgian Pro League, losing four games in eight and sitting in the relegation zone.

With the two sides both scrapping and searching for signs of improvement, it may be that they cancel each other out.

Goals are also expected on Thursday, with both teams scoring in nine of Genk's 10 games in all competitions this season.
