Chris Wilder will want Sheffield United to power up the table after Christmas
  • Wrexham are 15th in the Championship but are winless in five

  • Sheffield United are 18th but have won five of their last seven

  • Recommended bet: Sheffield United to win

Wrexham will want to arrest a five-game winless slump on Boxing Day when they take on Sheffield United but instead could be in for more festive pain.

The Red Dragons are struggling somewhat down in 15th in the second tier and the relentless Championship schedule is not doing them any favours over Christmas as they face the improving Blades who, despite being 18th, are fancied to charge up the table under Chris Wilder in the second half of the campaign.

United comfortably beat Birmingham on Saturday and now face the side that finished 18 points behind Blues in League One last season, suggesting Friday's game could end up being a similar outcome in the Blades' favour.

Team news

Wrexham's injury list remains fairly extensive with Lewis Brunt, Ryan Hardie, Liberato Cacace, Andy Cannon and Jay Rodriguez all still on the sidelines.

Issa Kabore, meanwhile, is away with Burkina Faso at the African Cup of Nations.

Sheffield United trio Tom Davies, Ben Mee and Sydie Peck are all injured and are set to miss out on the trip to Wales.

The stats

Wrexham have not won any of their last five games.

Sheffield United have secured victories in five of their last seven in the Championship.

Both teams have scored in four of Wrexham's last five matches.

The two clubs have not met in a league match since 2004, when the Blades won 3-2 away.

However, they have faced each other in cup matches recently — Sheffield United winning in the EFL Cup in August 2024 and also in the FA Cup, after a replay, in February 2023.

Wrexham have only won four of their 11 home league games this season.

Wrexham have allowed the most goal attempts in the Championship this season — in 22 matches they have allowed 345 goal attempts against them.

Prediction

Even though Sheffield United are three places and two points worse off than Wrexham, the visitors are favourites to win this Boxing Day clash.

The hosts are in the midst of a five-game winless spell, which has seen them draw with Preston, Watford and Blackburn and lose to Swansea and Hull.

Taking on the Blades, who will be determined to push on up the table after what was a dismal start to the season, is another demanding test.

Wilder's side were impressive when swatting ambitious Birmingham aside at the weekend and are much better than their position in the table suggests.

They should have enough quality to take all three points back to South Yorkshire from their Christmas trip to Wales.
